One of us is a little bit older than the other. Not so much that it would have been totally wrong in high school, but enough. As a result there will be a (brief) period of time when one of us will still be 28 and the other one of us will be – shhhhh, whisper it – 30. Yup, it’s just around that corner and sadly getting closer by the day. So while one of us will be revelling in his ‘look at me just entering my late twenties’ status, the other one of us will be rocking back and forwards in a ball and wondering where her life has gone.
That one of us would be me.
Except that doesn’t actually sound like too much fun so instead I’m going to put on my big girl pants, pour a large glass of champagne and embrace the big three oh with a list.
(We like lists. We’re geeks.)
And so in no particular order (and with thanks to the lovely KC for the idea) here are my thirty things I want to do before I’m – ouch – thirty…
- Learn to make cupcakes. ✔
- Buy a house.
- Watch a football match at Ibrox.
- Rent a boat at Balmaha and spend the day on Loch Lomond. ✔
- Eat at Martin Wishart.
- Watch at least one episode of The West Wing.
- Cycle to Ratho for a pub lunch.
- Climb Ben Nevis.
- Fit into my grey suit.
- Have our honeymoon. ✔
- Learn how to walk in high heels.
- Own a dishwasher.
- Walk the West Highland Way.
- Learn to cook. Like, really do it this time. ✔
- Play 18 holes of golf, in a not-totally-embarrassing fashion.
- Finish a book group book before going to book group. ✔
- Climb Berwick Law.
- Go sledging.
- Make a patchwork quilt.
- Make out with my husband in the back row of the cinema.
- Learn about history. Just, like, in general…
- Go back to London with John (this time having acknowledged that we actually like each other). ✔
- Bake a Victoria sponge. And serve it on my cake stand.
- Establish a proper, grown-up skincare routine. ✔
- Take Doris to France.
- Learn to use chopsticks.
- Have Christmas in our own house.
- Find a classic navy pea coat. ✔
- Build a wall of shelves (with a rolling ladder).
- Plan a fabulous 30th birthday party.
