The first night after we brought Doris home we went for a drive out to North Berwick. One of us had got it into her head that she wanted to pull up overlooking the bay, make a coffee and have a piece of cake. So that is exactly what we did. We often head out to the coast on a Sunday, ostensibly to make up for our lack of exercise through the week by going for a ‘good, long walk’. In reality we just like driving past the beautiful houses at Gullane and Aberlady, having a pub lunch and pottering around the gift shops and the beach, but it’s a gorgeous place to do it all the same.
We drove right to the far end of the beach and parked facing the sea. The sun was going down and it was an absolutely beautiful evening. We popped up the roof and lay ‘upstairs’ watching the light fade, still slightly shocked that we’d seen the idea through, that we’d actually acquired this 33 year old vehicle and were now responsible for the next stage of her history. It was a perfect night, topped off by some rather fabulous M&S coffee walnut cake, and the thought of many more adventures to come convinced us we’d done the right thing.
